Theme: Return of the Light

Location: Memorial Episcopal Church, 1407 Bolton Street, Baltimore, MD 21217

Show Dates: December 20, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Opening Reception: Friday, December 20, 2024, in the context of and following a worship service celebrating the Longest Night, 7:00 pm

People of various cultures, religions, and traditions in the Northern hemisphere have celebrated the promise of the return of the light on the Longest Night – the Winter Solstice. At Memorial, we are seeking to share contemporary artistic expressions of the aspirational, generative, creative energy of the Return of the Light.

In that light we are seeking visual artworks of any genre celebrating the theme the “Return of the Light.” In general, two-dimensional works need to be able to hang on 4’x8’ wall sections and should not exceed 46” in width or 96” in height. There are a few spaces that can accommodate larger works, but inclusion of larger works will be determined in context of the overall body of artworks selected. Accepted artworks need to be ready to hang. Three-Dimensional works will be considered. They must be solidly mounted. Due to technical and safety concerns, we are not able to suspend ariel artworks in the space. Fiber works may be submitted. If submitting technology-based artwork artists must provide all necessary equipment.

We do not want to censor works. The art selected will be displayed in a church and must be acceptable for viewing by individuals of all ages and all walks of life. Artworks must not be antagonistic, abusive, or disrespectful of persons, the church or faith in general. Works that are deemed inappropriate cannot be accepted.

Please provide a photograph of the work submitted, Artist’s name, title of the work, dimensions of the original, media, brief description of the work highlighting the association with the theme. (This text may be included in a possible catalogue.) Provide contact information. Please be selective of the number works you propose; in order to include artworks by a large number of diverse range of artists the committee will only accept 2 works per artist.

Submission Deadline: Friday, December 6, 2024, 5:00 pm EST

Jury Selection Notification: Monday, December 9, 2024

Selected artworks must be delivered to the church Monday, December 16, 2024 or Tuesday, December 17, 2024 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Artists must reclaim their artwork on Monday, January 6, 2025, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

The church cannot function as sales agent, but if patrons wish to purchase art works a percentage of the proceeds from art sales should be offered as a donation to the church.
